Armchair geek

I’ve noticed that the  Bookmarks toolbar on my browser at the office is populated heavily by newspapers, science and techie blogs. I still check on foodblogs but less frequently than I do the techie ones, maybe because I’m a kittykat when it comes to gadgets (Ooo, shineee!).  Anyway, while catching up on articles, I clicked on these two blogs and am being hugely entertained by them this arvo. Am I the only one who has just discovered Bad Science and Food Politics?

Uruguay, small but open

Uruguay is a Senate vote away from allowing gay and lesbian people to adopt. Their lefty coalition government led by Pres. Tabare Vazquez, has already legalized gay civil unions and ended a ban on homosexuals in the armed forces. [via AP]

Allowing easier adoption is merely recognising what already happens in nations with small populations and close knit extended families – someone is always helping to raise a relative’s child and for all intents and purposes, the family recognises them as parent and child even if the law doesn’t.

Looking for red pen-ners

Quartet Press (a new Romance publisher, het – so sorry- but this is a rare call) is canvassing for contract editors.

Quartet Press is currently seeking contractors for our content editor and copy editor positions.

At this time we are searching for individuals with editorial skills interested in working on one to four releases a month as an editor in all genres of romance, women’s fiction, YA, science fiction, fantasy and urban fantasy. Preference for both positions is given to non-authors or to writers not actively seeking publication/pursuing a career in writing, but authors will be considered as well. We are especially seeking editors with interest in working with non-erotic genres such as romantic suspense, historical romance and fantasy, though editors will be asked to acquire and edit across the romance and fantasy genres.

Duties include but are not limited to reading and responding to submissions, contracting books, editing and finalizing manuscripts, communicating with authors, final line editors, other content editors and Quartet press partners about various things such as cover art, excerpts, blurbs, promotion and more. Training and ongoing support will be provided to editorial staff at Quartet Press.

Content editors’ compensation is per word as well as royalty-based pay on ebooks and print books. Residuals are paid quarterly on all of an editor’s backlist. Copy editors’ compensation is per word. Per word compensation for both content editors and copy editors is paid immediately upon receipt of an invoice and completed manuscript.

Interested applicants should email Angela James at jobs@quartetpress.com with an email containing pertinent experience and qualifications, as well as specifying which position you are applying for.

Book been accepted? What’s next

Having your book published is not like giving birth. It’s like having your newborn ripped from your arms and given to a foster family you’ve never laid eyes on in your life.

Elizabeth Sims, a succesful mystery writer – you really want to check out her stories -  gives another helpful article for newly published/about to be published writers.

The 7 biggest myths of publishing over at WD, where she is a contributing editor,  is a mix of DIY, Be Nice and Keep Working. Oh, go read it, then check out her website for more practical advice.

Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project

Gathering the Unique Stories of the Lives of Lesbians Born in the Early 1900s

The Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project seeks to find and document the lives of old lesbians who were born in the early years of the last century. The lives that they led were difficult and in many way difficult for us, today, to understand. There were no lgbt publications, institutions or even personal examples to help guide their lives. They had to make it up as they went along. We seek to record their oral histories, known here as their herstories, to preserve what will soon be lost when they are all gone.

Check out the stories here. What a project!

My opinions will likely be linearly logical and gayly bent, as they tend to be.
