Women in politics

Australia got its first female Governor-General* today. (Link to swearing in ceremony)

Quentin Bryce (what a name!) is a lifelong champion of women’s rights, an accomplished lawyer, sportsperson and academic. She previously served as Governor of Queensland before her new appointment. Interestingly, the current Gov of QLD is also a woman. New South Wales (the state I live in) has had a female Gov since 2001.

The Premier of Queensland is a woman. The Australian Deputy Prime Minister is a woman. We have an Asian lesbian Federal Minister on the front bench. And today, the NSW government brings in their first female Deputy Premier.

There are many more women finally coming up for recognition in politics. Brilliant women, all of them, whether I agree with their policies or not.

Here’s a link to Forbes 2008 list of the world’s most powerful women to gawp at.

Indeed, I’m not going to speak about the soap opera that is the US presidential campaign.

(*G-G’s are the Queen’s representative in countries that still recognise the British Monarchy as sovereign. The role is largely ceremonial and civic although the G-G’s assent is required to formally pass a piece of Commonwealth legislation. In a follow-down effect, each state has a Governor that performs similar functions but at a State level).

Well, Canada had a female PM, we haven’t. Yet. 🙂

Evecho’s newsy bits

News, updates and links from the lesbian and publishing ‘verse that interest me, my current projects, keeping up with authors and sharing musings on middle-class life, gourmet adventures and comparisons between East/West perspectives. My opinions will likely be linearly logical and gayly bent, as they tend to be.
