‘the other’

My previous post set me off on a wee rant.

Why is it we are always seen as ‘other’? I mean, the label is so long – ‘women and people of colour’. That’s assuming mainstream are men and what, colourless? Are caucasians not also ‘people of interest’? Brushing off men/caucasians as uninteresting takes away their affect and responsibility and puts too much on the other, i.e. ‘people of colour’.

Why are ‘people of colour’ (bloody stupid label) always lumped with women? Throw in children, the disabled and queers too why don’t you. We’re all other in one way or another but please, being different in one aspect doesn’t mean you should be completely categorised in or under another mono homo label.

But before anyone goes on to say that they don’t do labels, I think that’s complete rubbish as well. We all label – in our heads, in our relationships, in our shopping, by who we include and what we condemn. I think labels are good because they define. Unfortunately, that is also their downside because definitions restrict change.

I’d chafe if I had to choose, at any point in time, where I stand FOREVER.  Me 20 years ago will not be the same Me 20 years from now. Heck, Me last month was not the same Me six months ago.

I really like being the sum of my parts as well as being more than that, even though census and syllabus insist on breaking me down only into recognisable shapes and uses.

I quite freely move between labels and I love being able to do that, but first I had to accept them for what they are and then move beyond. Understanding is key, acceptance follows.
